Nottage Maritime Institute

About Us

The museum is located in a former sail loft and is part of the Nottage Maritime Institute which aims to improve nautical, sailing and navigation skills. There is a collection of paintings, personal possessions, photographs and models all with local connections to the River Colne and its fishing, yachting and boat-building heritage.

Admission Costs

 Admission is free but donations are always welcome.

Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays 1pm - 4pm, and by appointment.

The main part of museum is upstairs, there is a stairlift, but some disabled visitors might find accessibilty difficult.

How to Find Us


Sunday train services operate to Wivenhoe from Colchester, Clacton and Walton-on-the Naze.

There are bus services, numbers 62, 74 or 78 from Colchester to Wivenhoe.  Alight at the Railway Station (No. 62) or at the Co-op near the top of the High Street (Nos 74 and 78).

Visitors by car are advised to park at the town car park off the High Street which is free or if it is full at the railway station where a fee is charged. 

From the High Street, walk down-hill to the River, at the Quay turn left. From the station walk up to the end of West Street, turn right and at the Quay turn left.

ship models
Are you dong any model ship restoration courses for 2014? I have already restored to sailing order 6 sailing boats (with radio control). I wonder what the content of a course might be I spotted a Billings kit fishing boat in one of the photos. Will visit when you open in May / Juhe. Regards Roy

Ship Models
We are planning to run a course on building half models for this coming Autumn season. If you are interested please e-mail directly to our administrator on admin@nottagemaritimeinstitute.org.uk for more information. Enrollment is usually in September.
