Care provided at the Sailors' Home

A quote from the Log Book illustrates the level of care received by shipwrecked crews.

"They were landed at Palling about 11am, naked having used their ripped clothing for waives. Their boots having to be cut off owing to the swelling of their legs. On their arrival at the Home they were shifted of their clothes, supplied with restoratives and put to bed...sent for medical assistance and bathed their limbs with a lotion of poppyheads.

The care that the sailors received meant a great deal to individuals who had not only been through terrible ordeals, but who were often doing dangerous and thankless jobs. Many who had spent time at the Home later wrote moving and heartfelt thank you letters. They provide an insight into the kindness and understanding demonstrated at the Sailors' Home. Many letters were accompanied by financial donations and the return of laundered clothes which had been borrowed at a time of extremity.
